A Brief History of the Chinese Egg Tart

The Chinese egg tart is not originally Chinese—it’s a result of cultural blending. Inspired by European custard pastries brought through trade and colonial influence, it was reimagined in southern China, especially in the Cantonese regions.

Local bakers adapted the recipe to suit regional tastes, creating a lighter, silkier custard and developing two main crust styles: flaky and cookie-like. By the mid-20th century, egg tarts became common in neighborhood bakeries and later a popular part of dim sum.

Today, the egg tart represents more than dessert—it reflects how cultures meet, adapt, and create something entirely new.
